7 Things To Do For A More Mindful Morning Routine

Woohoo! Diving into possibly one of my favorite topics- the morning routine.

I am one of those weird people that loves routine. I actually get giddy excited about making little tweaks and additions to my morning routine that make it feel fun and inspiring while allowing me to stay on track with my daily and long term goals. I find my inspiration by geeking out on articles about how other successful people run their mornings and have picked up lots of tricks that work well for me and my lifestyle.

I make it a priority to continuously shift my routine every so often to keep it interesting and fresh and therefore an exciting and rewarding part of my day that I look forward to. Most importantly, I love my morning routine because it gives me dedicated time to care for myself in the ways that fill me up. That is critical for me because it means that when I start the rest of my day, I do so from a place of feeling grounded, centered and ready to take on anything the day has to offer, which as a mom, wife, and business owner, can mean a whole lot of surprises and challenges that require me to be my best self.

I am not naturally an early riser; it has been an intentional process in training myself to become one. Waking up early became increasingly important to me after I had my daughter and quickly learned that waking up to serve a small human taskmaster was not how I wanted to start each day. So I wake up well before she does so I can fit in quiet time, just for me.

1. Lemon Water

First thing is warm lemon water. As I heat up the water I start to slowly wake up and feed our pets. I am very particular about lighting in the dark of the morning so I turn on some flameless candles and a couple dim lights. I try to mimic the sun coming up.

2. Write

I sit down with my journal and write down my 10 tops goals that are top of mind. These are the same every day and for me they have been for over a year as I work towards them. This helps remind me of the bigger picture and sets my intention for the day. Then I write down 1 small thing I am grateful for.

3. Meditate

Yes, I do this every single day. I like to do a guided meditation and when I started it was about 2 minutes. Now I sit for about 10. It has absolutely been a transformational practice for me.

4. Coffee

Yes, please.

5. Movement

Time for my workout practice. I do M3 7 days per week. I also workout on a rebounder a few times per week for added cardio and because it’s so much fun and gets me pumped!

6. Schedule My Day

I look through my schedule for the day and write in any last minute things I’d like to achieve. Once my schedule is on paper it gives me the freedom to stay and work in the moment more efficiently as I go rather than jumping from task to task.

7. LASTLY: Check my phone and emails

By this time I have been awake for almost 2 hours and I have not checked my phone or emails. I can’t say how important it has been to wake up and fuel myself before tending to everyone else. Being on my phone, on emails, and in social can be very draining and pulls you out of your flow and purpose. Get to it once you feel centered and grounded in where you are for your day.

At this point the family is getting up. Time for breakfast, getting ready, school lunch, off to school, and off to teach. I can say that I love my mornings and I don’t feel stressed or rushed going into my day. I get to be present with my daughter when she wakes up and chat with her as she gets ready. We each have different needs and schedules but if you can find an extra bit of time to start your day for you, I truly believe it sets you up to feel more grounded, present, and connected as the days fly by.

I would love to know - what are your favorite morning things? What’s one trick or hack that makes life easier or more fun at the start of your day?
